Direct filtration, also known as conventional filtration, is a particulate water treatment process used to remove suspended solid particles and organic matter from water. It is a commonly used water filtration method for removing turbidity and suspended solids from water.

The direct filtration process begins with the addition of coagulant chemicals, such as aluminium sulphate or ferric chloride, to the raw water in order to reduce the turbidity, which is the amount of suspended particles in the water. The coagulant chemically binds to solid particles, forming larger aggregates, or flocs, which then settle to the bottom of the water.

The raw water is then passed through a series of filters, usually composed of sand, anthracite and gravel, to remove the remaining suspended solids. As the water passes through the filters, all the suspended solids, colloidal solids, and organic matter are removed, resulting in clear and particle-free water. The filter is back-washed periodically in order to clean out the accumulated solids.

Direct filtration is usually used as part of a multi-stage water treatment process, often in conjunction with other processes, such as sedimentation and ozonation, to ensure the highest quality drinking water. Although direct filtration is a simple and economical process, it requires careful monitoring and control of chemical dosages, filter backwash and filter media selections in order to ensure efficient and effective operation.
