Barefoot doctors practise in rural villages and are known for their effective treatments and deep understanding of the local environment. In addition to TCM, they will often give massage treatments, recommend healthy lifestyles, provide herbal medications and provide vaccinations.

Although barefoot doctors provide invaluable services to rural communities, their lack of formal medical training and support from the government mean that their results may not be as successful as those of a trained physician. However, their low cost, availability, and familiarity with local conditions mean that many rural patients continue to turn to them for care.
