Atlantes is a word used to describe stone or wooden figures that were used in ancient architecture. They were usually seen in the form of male caryatids, or male figures supporting the weight of a structure.

The earliest known usage of this term is found in the writings of Pliny the Elder who described the entrance of the Temple of Jupiter in Rome as having “twelve figures of Atlantes supporting the beam”. Atlantes have been seen throughout history in many different parts of the world, from ancient Greece to the Republic of Maya in Mexico.

The usage of atlantes in architecture today is largely symbolic and is used to signify strength, wisdom and power. In modern architecture, it is common to see atlantes as decorative elements in buildings, such as in public parks.
