Apartheid是南非语言，意思是“种族隔离”，一般指南非种族隔离政策。在1948年，南非白人政府成立之后，推行“白人至上”的种族压迫政策，即apartheid政策。
在这一政策下，非白人受到了严重的歧视，他们不能接受普通教育，也<不能购买白人可用的房屋，此外，他们不能进入白人可以使用的娱乐场所，如酒吧、健身房等。
自20世纪50年代以来，apartheid一直是南非种族隔离政策的主要特征。1991年，由于国际声势和南非民众的压力，南非政府正式取消了apartheid政策，实现了全民一人一票的民主政治，标志着南非人民结束了种族隔离历史。
Apartheid一词在国际上被广泛使用，用以指称任何形式的，以某种种族、宗教、文化、社会地位等为基础的社会差别政策及制度。它也指“以单一种族为基础的非民主政体”，用于指称苏联等一些社会主义国家这类政体。
