Antiphlogistic drugs, also known as anti-inflammatory drugs, are medications which are used to reduce inflammation. When the body becomes inflamed, it is usually in response to a triggering event, such as an infection, an injury or an irritant. The inflammatory process causes the body to produce substances that promote healing, but in some cases the inflammatory response becomes excessive and causes tissue damage. At this point, an anti-inflammatory drug can be used to reduce the inflammation, thereby limiting the tissue damage.

There are many different types of antiphlogistic drugs available, including corticosteroids, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and Selective Cyclo-Oxygenase-2 (COX-2) inhibitors. Corticosteroids are the most powerful type of antiphlogistic drug, and are often used to treat painful and inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and asthma. NSAIDs, such as ibuprofen and naproxen, work by blocking enzymes called cyclooxygenases (COX), which are involved in the production of inflammatory chemicals. COX-2 inhibitors, such as celecoxib, are similar to NSAIDs, but specifically target COX-2, which produces inflammatory chemicals at the site of inflammation.

Antiphlogistic drugs can be taken orally or applied topically. When applied topically, they are usually in the form of a lotion, cream, ointment or gel, and are applied directly to the area of inflammation. When taken orally, they are usually in the form of a tablet, capsule or liquid. Whichever form is used, the aim of antiphlogistic drugs is to reduce inflammation and therefore reduce the associated discomfort, pain and tissue damage.
