Air horsepower is calculated by multiplying the total volume of air in cubic feet per minute (CFM) that an engine or fan generates by its pressure, which is measured in “inches of water” (also known as “static pressure”). The formula is:

Air Horsepower (hp) = Flow (CFM) x Pressure (inches of water)

When the pressure is greater, more air is moving through the engine or fan, and thus more air horsepower is generated.

Air horsepower is used in a variety of fields, from automotive engineering to HVAC system design. In HVAC, for example, air horsepower is used to measure the performance of fans, blowers and other mechanical devices used to move air from one place to another.
