Academic costume, also known as academic regalia, is a traditional clothing worn by university professors, students and anyone taking part in a graduation ceremony. It is usually worn during graduation ceremonies, such as commencement.

In most of Western cultures, academic costume consists of a gown, hood, hat and in some cases a cape. It is believed that the enactment of academic costume dates back to 1222 when a French doctor of law took up his degree of master with the wearing of a long robe. In England, the graduation gown was used for the first time in 1276.

The coloring of the gown and hood usually represent the area of learning from the university from which the wearer obtained the degree. The fabric of the gown can also indicate the level of qualification attained by the wearer.

The hood is usually made of silk and is lined with different colors to represent the university/college where the degree was earned. It is decorated with a velvet material that is also colored to show the university or college’s colors.

The hat, commonly known as a mortarboard, is also part of the academic costume. It is an academic cap shaped like a square board with a tassel on top. The colors of the tassel usually represent the colors of the university from which the degree was attained.

The academic costume is traditionally worn when taking part in a graduation ceremony. It is also worn by students and professors in some universities when performing certain ceremonies.
